Three Golden Rules

1. Legebitra Is Your Starting Point for Everything Legebitra (Trubarjeva cesta 76A, Ljubljana; legebitra.si; 01 430 51 44) is the central LGBTQ+ health organisation in Slovenia. Free rapid testing, PrEP navigation, chemsex support, mental health referrals, and community connection. For almost any sexual health question, Legebitra should be your first call — they know the system and will get you to the right place.

2. PrEP Is Reimbursed by ZZZS — Start via Legebitra PrEP is covered by ZZZS (national health insurance) and prescribed at UKC Ljubljana's Infekcijska klinika (Japljeva ulica 2). Legebitra will refer you in and can sometimes accelerate the process. At every three-month follow-up, explicitly request three-site swab testing — throat (bris žrela), rectal (rektalni bris), and urethral (uretralni bris).

3. For PEP: UKC Ljubljana Infekcijska klinika, Within 72 Hours PEP is free and available 24 hours at UKC Ljubljana's Klinika za infekcijske bolezni (01 522 22 00). Say: "Potrebujem PEP za HIV." Do not wait.

The Context

Slovenia is one of the more progressive countries in the former Yugoslav region. Ljubljana has an active LGBTQ+ community, and Legebitra operates at a standard comparable to LGBTQ+ health organisations in western Europe. PrEP reimbursement and free PEP access give gay and bisexual men in Slovenia access to HIV prevention tools that are not available in many neighbouring countries.

Outside Ljubljana, social conservatism increases and specialist services are limited — most gay and bisexual men outside the capital will use Ljubljana's infrastructure regardless of where they live.
