The Context

Chemsex exists in Slovenia as in all European countries. Drug use is illegal in Slovenia, though personal possession of small amounts is treated as a minor administrative offence rather than a criminal matter in practice. This creates some deterrent to seeking help, but healthcare providers and Legebitra staff are bound by professional confidentiality — discussing chemsex with them will not result in police involvement.

First Contact: Legebitra

Legebitra: legebitra.si / 01 430 51 44

Legebitra is the most appropriate first contact for chemsex concerns. Staff are trained in harm reduction and have specific experience with gay and bisexual men. They can:

  • Discuss your situation confidentially
  • Provide harm reduction information
  • Help arrange STI testing after sessions
  • Refer to addiction or counselling services
  • Advise on PrEP adherence during chemsex

Harm Reduction Essentials

HIV and STI Risk

Chemsex elevates HIV and STI transmission risk substantially. Regular testing after sessions is essential:

  • Test for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia
  • Request three-site swabs: bris žrela (throat), rektalni bris (rectal), uretralni bris (urethral)
  • Keep PrEP consistent — missing doses reduces protection

GHB/GBL — The Overdose Risk

GHB and GBL have a narrow dosing window. Never mix with alcohol — this combination can cause respiratory failure and death.

If someone becomes unresponsive: call 112 immediately. This is a medical emergency. Tell the paramedics what substance was involved — they cannot help effectively without this information.

Crystal Meth and Mephedrone

Both cause extended arousal and wakefulness. Comedowns involve significant depression and anxiety. Psychological dependency can develop quickly with regular use. If you are concerned about your use, Legebitra can refer to appropriate support.

Injecting

Never share injecting equipment. Needle exchange is available — ask Legebitra for the nearest current service.

Support for Reducing or Stopping

  • Legebitra — 01 430 51 44 — first contact; non-judgmental; can refer to specialists
  • Your izbrani zdravnik (GP) — can provide a napotnica to addiction medicine (odvisnost); bound by confidentiality
  • CPZOPD — Center za preprečevanje in zdravljenje odvisnosti — public addiction treatment centres in Ljubljana and other cities; accessed via GP referral

PrEP During Chemsex

Daily PrEP maintains protection during chemsex sessions if doses are taken consistently. If you use on-demand PrEP (2+1+1), the pre-sex doses must actually be taken — this can be harder to manage during spontaneous or extended sessions.

Discuss with Legebitra or your PrEP prescriber at UKC which approach fits your usage patterns.

Emergency

112 — ambulance UKC Ljubljana Urgenca: 01 522 22 00 (for PEP after a session with potential HIV exposure)
