Testing in Slovenia: Legebitra (Ljubljana)

The Short Version

Legebitra is the primary sexual health resource for gay and bisexual men in Ljubljana and is widely considered one of the best LGBTQ+ health organisations in the Western Balkans and former Yugoslav region. Free, non-judgmental, and specifically focused on the community. The Three-Site Testing Gap

Legebitra rapid tests cover HIV and syphilis. For a complete STI screen — including bacterial infections that gay and bisexual men are particularly vulnerable to — you need three-site swab testing:

Bris žrela — throat swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the throat)
Bris anusa / rektalni bris — rectal swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the rectum)
Uretralni bris — urethral swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the urethra)

Throat and rectal gonorrhoea and chlamydia are almost always symptomless. Testing urine or blood alone will miss them.

For bacterial swab testing, Legebitra will refer you to:

UKC Ljubljana — Infekcijska klinika (Japljeva ulica 2) — free with ZZZS insurance; requires a napotnica (referral) from your izbrani zdravnik (registered GP); or can be accessed directly in some cases via Legebitra referral
Private laboratories — Synlab Slovenia (synlab.si), LabTests, or similar; no referral needed; costs roughly €50–100 for a full STI panel; results in 1–3 days

The Klinika za infekcijske bolezni in vročinska stanja (Clinic for Infectious Diseases) at UKC Ljubljana is the main clinical resource for HIV care, PrEP, and complex STI management. For STI testing:

Walk-in is possible at the ambulanta (outpatient) for some services; check current procedures
A napotnica from your izbrani zdravnik enables free ZZZS-covered consultation
Three-site swab testing is available — specify your sexual practices when booking
