The Landscape

Slovenia has relatively progressive laws for the region — same-sex partnerships have had legal recognition, and Ljubljana has an active LGBTQ+ community. However, full marriage equality and adoption rights have faced political resistance, and outside Ljubljana, conservative social attitudes are more common.

Mental health services in Slovenia are under-resourced at the national level — waiting times for public psychiatry and psychology are significant. Legebitra is the main community resource for gay and bisexual men's mental health needs.

Accessing Therapy via the Public System

Public mental health services are accessed through:

  1. Your izbrani zdravnik (registered GP) — ask for a napotnica to a psihiatrična ambulanta (psychiatric outpatient clinic) or psihologinja/psiholog
  2. ZZZS covers the consultation once you have a napotnica
  3. Waiting times for non-acute care can be several months

Legebitra's counselling service is faster and more specifically relevant for gay and bisexual men — a useful parallel to the public waiting list.

Private Therapy

Private psychologists and psychotherapists in Ljubljana charge approximately €60–100 per session. When seeking an affirming therapist:

  • Ask Legebitra for referrals — they maintain a working list of affirming private practitioners in Ljubljana
  • Look for therapists who explicitly list LGBTQ+ affirming practice
  • Avoid any therapist advertising sexual orientation change approaches

HIV Diagnosis and Mental Health

If you have recently received a positive HIV diagnosis:

  • Legebitra can provide immediate psychosocial support and peer connection
  • The infectious disease team at UKC Ljubljana can refer to hospital-based psychological support — ask explicitly at your first clinical appointment
  • Connecting with others who have navigated HIV diagnosis in Slovenia helps — Legebitra can facilitate peer contacts
