Overview
Slovenia's vaccination programme covers some vaccines free for gay and bisexual men as a risk group. Mpox vaccination has been available at UKC Ljubljana. Hepatitis A and B can be obtained via the public system or privately. HPV is available free for boys in the school-age programme but expensive for adults.
Mpox (Monkeypox)
Cost: Free for gay and bisexual men (risk group) Route: UKC Ljubljana Infekcijska klinika / Legebitra referral
During and after the 2022 Mpox outbreak, Slovenia vaccinated gay and bisexual men as a priority group. The Jynneos vaccine remains available at UKC Ljubljana's Infekcijska klinika.
Contact Legebitra (legebitra.si / 01 430 51 44) for current availability and booking procedures — they have the most up-to-date information on vaccine stock and the process for accessing it.
Hepatitis A
Cost: Available via public system (risk group provision); check availability; otherwise ~€45–70/dose privately Route: Izbrani zdravnik (registered GP) or private clinic
Hepatitis A is transmitted sexually (oral-anal contact) and through contaminated food/water. As a risk group, gay and bisexual men may be able to access Hep A vaccination free via the public healthcare system — ask your izbrani zdravnik specifically about cepljenje proti hepatitisu A za rizične skupine (Hep A vaccination for risk groups).
Private vaccination clinics in Ljubljana (Medicofit, Medispot, or travel clinics) provide Hep A vaccination without waiting — roughly €45–70 per dose; two doses required.
Hepatitis B
Cost: May be available free via public system; otherwise ~€40–60/dose privately Route: Izbrani zdravnik or private clinic
Hepatitis B vaccination for risk groups is available through the NIJZ (National Institute of Public Health) framework. Ask your izbrani zdravnik. Three doses over 6 months are required; accelerated schedule available.
If you have prior vaccination or prior infection, a titre blood test can confirm immunity.
Combined Hep A+B (Twinrix) vaccine is available privately.
HPV
Cost: Free in school programme for boys (6th grade onwards); adults pay privately Route: Private clinic for adults
Slovenia extended HPV vaccination to boys in the national school programme. Most adult gay and bisexual men are outside this programme and must pay privately.
Private cost: approximately €70–90 per dose; three doses required (0, 2, 6 months) giving a total of roughly €210–270. This is cheaper than in many other EU countries.
Where to access: private clinics or some pharmacies with vaccination services in Ljubljana. Gardasil 9 (covering 9 HPV types, including those associated with anal cancer and genital warts) is the recommended formulation.
