But the healthcare infrastructure is there, and with the right navigation, you can access everything you need: free anonymous testing, private PrEP at reasonable cost, and free PEP at infectious disease hospitals. The key is knowing how to find the right providers.
Three Golden Rules for Poland
1. Use PKD for Testing — Free, Anonymous, Nationwide
The PKD network (Punkty Konsultacyjno-Diagnostyczne) provides free, anonymous HIV and syphilis testing across Poland. No PESEL, no name. Find your nearest at aids.gov.pl/pkd. Lambda Warszawa (lambdawarszawa.org) runs a PKD in Warsaw and can navigate you elsewhere. For three-site swab testing (essential for complete STI screening), use private labs (Diagnostyka, Alab) — approximately 200–400 PLN for a full panel.
2. Vet Your Doctor Before Booking
Poland's healthcare providers range from excellent to actively hostile. Before booking any private doctor for PrEP or sexual health care, get a referral from Lambda Warszawa or KPH, check ZnanyLekarz reviews, or use LuxMed / Medicover for corporate-standard professionalism. Don't walk into a random clinic.
3. For PEP: Szpital Zakaźny, Any Hour
Go to the nearest szpital zakaźny (infectious disease hospital) for PEP. PEP is free via NFZ for Polish residents. Warsaw: Wolska 37. Kraków: Śniadeckich 5. Be prepared for a clinical interaction — focus on getting the medication. Within 72 hours, no waiting.
Getting Tested
PKD Network: aids.gov.pl/pkd — free, anonymous, HIV + syphilis. Use nationwide.
Lambda Warszawa PKD (lambdawarszawa.org): Warsaw's community-run testing, safest environment.
Private labs: Diagnostyka, Alab, Synevo — full panels including three-site swabs (wymaz z gardła, odbytu, cewki moczowej). No referral needed. ~200–400 PLN.
Three-site rule: throat + rectal + urethral swabs + blood. Must ask for this explicitly. Testing frequency: every 3 months.
PrEP
Not NFZ-reimbursed. Private prescription via vetted zakaźnik (infectiologist). Generic PrEP: ~120–200 PLN/month. LuxMed and Medicover reliable clinic chains. Lambda and KPH for referrals.
