Poland has a functional testing infrastructure for gay and bisexual men, anchored by the PKD network (free anonymous testing points) and Lambda Warszawa in the capital. The public NFZ system is less reliable due to variable attitudes among healthcare providers; private labs and community-based services are the preferred routes.

Lambda Warszawa

Lambda Warszawa Web: lambdawarszawa.org Warsaw's main LGBTQ+ organisation. Lambda operates a PKD (Punkt Konsultacyjno-Diagnostyczny) — a free, anonymous HIV and STI testing point — and provides counselling alongside testing. If you're in Warsaw, start here. The environment is genuinely safe and affirming.

Lambda also maintains referral lists of affirming healthcare providers for more complex needs.

PKD Network — Across Poland

PKD = Punkty Konsultacyjno-Diagnostyczne (Consultation and Diagnostic Points). These are government-funded anonymous testing centres for HIV and other STIs, operated at locations across Poland.

Key features:

  • Free — no cost
  • Anonymous — no PESEL, no name required
  • Rapid HIV and syphilis testing at most locations; hepatitis at some

National map: aids.gov.pl/pkd — use this to find your nearest PKD. Major cities with PKD points include Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Poznań, Trójmiasto (Gdańsk/Gdynia/Sopot), Łódź, Katowice, and others.

This is the most accessible testing infrastructure for gay and bisexual men in Poland — use it.

Three-Site Testing: The Gap

PKD points focus on HIV and syphilis. For a complete STI screen that catches chlamydia and gonorrhoea — which commonly infect the throat and rectum without symptoms — you need swabs from three sites:

  • Wymaz z gardła — throat swab
  • Wymaz z odbytu / odbytnica — rectal swab
  • Wymaz z cewki moczowej — urethral swab

For three-site swabs in Poland:

  • Private labs (Diagnostyka, Alab, Synevo) — you can order STI panels including swabs directly without a doctor's referral at most branches. Cost: approximately 200–400 PLN for a comprehensive panel.
  • Private infectiologist (zakaźnik) — can order a full panel and swabs; see Doctor Vetting for finding an affirming one.
  • NFZ route: possible via your lekarza pierwszego kontaktu (primary care doctor) with a skierowanie (referral), but attitude variability makes the private route more reliable.

Strategy: Use PKD for regular HIV/syphilis monitoring. Supplement with a private lab panel including swabs every 3–6 months or after higher-risk periods.

Private Labs — Diagnostyka / Alab / Synevo

Poland's private lab networks are widespread, professional, and convenient:

  • Diagnostyka (diagnostyka.pl) — largest network, locations in every major city
  • Alab Laboratoria (alablaboratoria.pl) — good coverage
  • Synevo (synevo.pl) — strong in Warsaw and other major cities

You can book STI panels online at most of these, go to a collection point, and receive results digitally. No doctor's referral needed for basic panels.

Frequency

HIV/syphilis at PKD: every 3 months. Full three-site private panel: every 3–6 months or after higher-risk periods.
