Finland has some of the most comprehensive sexual health infrastructure in Europe, anchored by Hivpoint (the go-to LGBTQ+-friendly testing organisation) and the public hospital sukupuolitautien poliklinikka system. PrEP has been free since 2021. The challenge is waiting times — the public route is excellent but slow, and navigating that reality is the core Finnish sexual health skill.

The Three Golden Rules

1. Kela Is Your Safety Net

Kela (the Social Insurance Institution) reimburses medication and healthcare costs for Finnish residents. PrEP medication is free on the public route via Kela. Understanding what Kela covers and what it doesn't — and when the private route is worth it — is the key to navigating Finnish healthcare.

2. Start at Hivpoint

Hivpoint is the fastest, most LGBTQ+-competent entry point to sexual health care in Finland. For HIV testing, advice on PrEP access, vaccine referrals, and harm reduction — Hivpoint first. They know the system, they know the community, and they can navigate you to the right next step.

3. 116 117 for Emergencies

For PEP or any urgent medical need, call 116 117 first — the free 24/7 medical helpline will direct you to the right emergency department. For PEP: go to Päivystys at Haartman sairaala (Helsinki) or the nearest university hospital.
