DoxyPEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is a single 200mg dose of doxycycline taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Clinical evidence shows 70–80% reduction in syphilis and chlamydia risk among gay and bisexual men and trans women.
Is DoxyPEP Available in Finland?
Doxycycline is widely used in Finland for multiple indications. Finnish infectious disease physicians are aware of DoxyPEP evidence, and the sukupuolitautien poliklinikka at Meilahti is one of the more informed centres in Finland.
DoxyPEP is not yet officially part of Kela-reimbursed guidelines in Finland. In practice:
- Some doctors at the sukupuolitautien poliklinikka or via Hivpoint referral will prescribe it
- Prescription will typically be written as a standard antibiotic prescription (not a specific DoxyPEP indication)
- Doxycycline is inexpensive — approximately €5–15 per course at any apteekki, with or without Kela reimbursement

What DoxyPEP Covers and Doesn't
Effective reduction:
- Syphilis — strong evidence
- Chlamydia — strong evidence
Partial or uncertain:
- Gonorrhoea — partial effectiveness; gonorrhoea resistance to doxycycline is a growing concern
No effect:
- HIV — DoxyPEP does not replace PrEP or PEP
- HPV, herpes, hepatitis
Dosing
200mg doxycycline (two 100mg tablets) as a single dose within 72 hours of unprotected sex — earlier is better.
Take with food and plenty of water. Avoid lying down for 30 minutes after taking. Avoid prolonged sun exposure during a course.
Cost
Doxycycline at a Finnish apteekki is inexpensive. Even without Kela reimbursement:
- 10 × 100mg tablets: approximately €5–12
- Sufficient for 5 DoxyPEP doses
Part of a Broader Approach
DoxyPEP works best alongside regular testing (three-monthly), PrEP, and vaccines. Continued regular STI testing is important even when using DoxyPEP — breakthrough infections do occur, and your doctor needs data to monitor for antibiotic resistance patterns.
