Finland has a strong mental health infrastructure with universal public provision. LGBTQ+-specific services are fewer than in larger countries but are well-organised and nationally networked through Seta (the Finnish LGBTQ+ rights organisation). The country is also notable for having a genuine culture around seeking help — mental health support is less stigmatised here than in many European contexts.

General Mental Health Services

Your Terveysasema (Health Station)

Your local terveysasema is the starting point for accessing publicly funded mental health care. A doctor or nurse can:

  • Refer you to a psykologi (psychologist) or psykiatri (psychiatrist)
  • Prescribe short-term support while waiting for therapy
  • Connect you with community mental health services

Mielenterveystalo.fi

Finland's national mental health online service. Offers self-assessment, online self-help programmes, and information about finding services. Available in Finnish and Swedish; some English content.

Psychotherapy Under Kela

Finland has a unique system: Kela-funded psychotherapy (Kelan kuntoutuspsykoterapia). If you're a working-age person with a mental health diagnosis affecting your ability to work or study, Kela funds individual psychotherapy for 2–3 years.

To access:

  1. Get a psychiatrist's assessment and recommendation (via terveysasema or private psychiatrist)
  2. Apply to Kela with the psychiatrist's statement
  3. Choose a therapist from the Kela-approved list

The waiting time for the initial psychiatrist appointment is the main barrier (often several months via public route; faster privately at approximately €150–200/session).

Living with HIV — Mental Health

A diagnosis, or the anxiety of possible exposure, is a significant mental health event. Resources:

  • Hivpoint counselling — immediate, experienced, HIV-literate
  • Positiiviset ry (positiiviset.fi) — Finnish Association of HIV-Positive People. Peer support, practical advice, community.
  • HUS Infection Clinic social work — psychosocial support is part of HIV care at Meilahti
