Chemsex — the use of specific drugs in sexual contexts, primarily among gay and bisexual men — exists in Finland's major cities, particularly Helsinki. The scene is smaller and less visible than in Berlin or Amsterdam, but the same drugs and the same risks apply. Finland's harm reduction culture is generally practical and non-judgemental.

The Chemsex Landscape in Finland

Common drugs in Finnish chemsex contexts:

  • Crystal methamphetamine (Tina) — present in Helsinki's gay scene
  • GHB/GBL (G) — sedative/euphoric; rapid overdose risk with narrow dosing window
  • Mephedrone — less widespread but present
  • MDMA — used in party/sexual contexts
  • Poppers (amyl nitrite) — widely used and legal in Finland

If It's an Emergency

Call 112. If someone is unresponsive, having a seizure, or you suspect GHB/GBL overdose:

  • GHB overdose: person appears to be sleeping but cannot be woken, irregular breathing
  • Put in recovery position
  • Call 112 — stay with the person

116 117 (medical helpline) can also advise on drug emergencies outside immediate life-threatening situations.

Do not leave someone alone in a GHB overdose.

Harm Reduction

For GHB/GBL:

  • Never mix with alcohol — the combination is significantly more likely to cause overdose
  • Track your dose carefully; the window between recreational and overdose is narrow
  • Never use alone
  • Know the recovery position and have 112 on speed dial

For crystal meth:

  • Extended sessions create significant HIV/STI transmission risk
  • PrEP works but must be taken consistently — phone alarms are your friend
  • Post-session depression can be intense — don't be alone in the crash period

General:

  • Drug testing services are available in Finland — check with A-klinikka or EHYT for current locations and times
  • PrEP remains effective during chemsex if taken properly
  • Regular three-monthly testing is particularly important

The HIV Link

Finland has a well-controlled HIV epidemic, but chemsex sessions create concentrated risk. If you're sexually active during or after chemsex and HIV-negative:

  • PrEP is your most important protection
  • If you've had a potential HIV exposure, PEP is available at Päivystys within 72 hours

Getting Help With Drug Use

If drug use has become a problem:

  • A-klinikka — no referral needed, walk-in available at many locations
  • Kela-funded rehabilitation — for ongoing dependency issues, Kela can fund treatment through a doctor's referral
  • Your terveysasema can refer you without judgement
