Finland's sexual health testing system sits across three tiers: the community Hivpoint service for rapid HIV testing, specialist sukupuolitautien poliklinikat (venereal disease outpatient clinics) for full panels, and terveysasemat (health stations) for GP-level care. Knowing which tier to use for what saves time.

Hivpoint — Community Testing

Hivpoint (hivpoint.fi) is Finland's leading LGBTQ+-friendly community HIV testing organisation. It operates in Helsinki, Tampere, and Oulu.

Helsinki: Hivpoint Helsinki — Urho Kekkosen katu 4–6 C 27 (UKK building), 00100 Helsinki. Appointments at hivpoint.fi.

What Hivpoint offers:

  • Rapid HIV test (result in 20 minutes)
  • Rapid syphilis test
  • Counselling and referral
  • Anonymous — no name required if you prefer
  • No health insurance required

What Hivpoint doesn't offer:

  • Full gonorrhoea/chlamydia testing (throat, rectal, urethral swabs) — for these you need the sukupuolitautien poliklinikka or a terveysasema
  • Treatment on-site (they refer)

Hivpoint is the ideal starting point for a rapid, anonymous HIV check and to get advice on where to go next for a full panel.

Sukupuolitautien Poliklinikka — Full STI Panel

The sukupuolitautien poliklinikka (venereal disease outpatient clinic) is the specialist clinic for full STI work-up. In Helsinki:

Helsinki University Hospital — Meilahti Sukupuolitautien poliklinikka Haartmaninkatu 4, 00290 Helsinki (Meilahti Triangle Hospital) hus.fi | Phone: 09 4711

Services: HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia (all three sites), hepatitis B/C. Walk-in hours available — check current schedule at hus.fi. Otherwise book via the Maisa portal (asiointi.maisa.fi).

Cost: Free for Finnish residents (Kela-covered as clinically indicated).

This is the right place for:

  • A comprehensive three-site panel (throat + rectal + urethral swabs)
  • Follow-up after a positive rapid test
  • Monitoring as part of your PrEP programme

Terveysasema — Local Health Station

Your local terveysasema (health station) can also order HIV and STI tests, but quality for gay and bisexual men varies significantly. Key issue: you must explicitly request three-site testing:

"Haluan testata sukupuolitautien varalta — nielu-, peräsuoli- ja virtsaputkinäyte." ("I want to test for STIs — throat, rectal, and urethral swabs.")

Without specifically asking, you may receive only a standard blood test. Staff at terveysasemat have varying levels of experience with gay and bisexual men's sexual health — the sukupuolitautien poliklinikka or Hivpoint are generally better first options.

The Three-Site Testing Gap

Like many countries, Finland's routine STI testing doesn't automatically include three-site sampling. Gay and bisexual men who have oral or anal sex need:

  • Throat swab — gonorrhoea and chlamydia of the throat (often asymptomatic)
  • Rectal swab — gonorrhoea and chlamydia of the rectum (often asymptomatic)
  • Urethral swab or first-void urine — gonorrhoea and chlamydia of the urethra

Request all three sites explicitly wherever you go.

Private Testing Option

Private clinics (Mehiläinen, Terveystalo) also offer STI testing, with shorter waiting times but at cost (approximately €80–150 for a full panel). Useful if public waiting times are long or you need results urgently.

How Often to Test

Sexual activity Recommended frequency
Regular new partners Every 3 months
On PrEP Every 3 months (mandatory for programme)
Specific exposure 4–6 weeks for HIV; 1–2 weeks for bacterial STIs
Steady partner(s) only Every 6–12 months
