Norway provides good vaccine access for gay and bisexual men — free for Mpox and Hepatitis A/B under the §4 smittevern provisions. HPV is where the system fails men, with no free access for adult males outside specific programmes.

Mpox

Mpox vaccination is free for high-risk groups including gay and bisexual men.

In Oslo: Olafiaklinikken (Trondheimsveien 2) handles Mpox vaccination for eligible groups. Contact them or check oslo-universitetssykehus.no for current booking information. Mpox vaccination is often managed separately from the regular STI schedule.

Outside Oslo: Your local infectious disease outpatient clinic (infeksjonspoliklinikk) or in some cases your fastlege can facilitate. Contact 116 117 or your fastlege to find the nearest vaccination point.

Two doses (Jynneos/Imvanex) required, 4 weeks apart. Free for eligible groups.

Hepatitis A and B

Both Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are free for gay and bisexual men under the §4 smittevern provisions in Norway.

Hepatitis B: Ask at Olafiaklinikken or your fastlege. If you're not immune (anti-HBs blood test can confirm), vaccination is covered. Three doses for the full series.

Hepatitis A: Free for smittevern-eligible groups — ask your fastlege or Olafiaklinikken. Two doses for full protection.

Combined Hep A+B (Twinrix): Available on request, covered under §4 for eligible groups.

This is one of the best aspects of Norway's system for gay and bisexual men — both hepatitis vaccines are free when clinically indicated.

HPV (Humant papillomavirus)

Norway's HPV vaccination programme is free for:

  • Girls born in 1991 or later (school programme)
  • Boys have been included in the school programme since 2018 (age 12)

For adult men: HPV vaccination is not covered for men who weren't vaccinated in the school programme and are now adults, unless you're part of a specific pilot or risk-group programme.

Private cost: Gardasil 9 approximately 3,500–5,500 NOK for the full series (2–3 doses). Available via your fastlege on private prescription or at Apotek on prescription.

What to do: Ask your fastlege whether any risk-group or subsidised HPV programme currently applies to gay and bisexual men — this has been discussed in Norwegian public health and may have expanded by the time you're reading this.

Why it matters: HPV causes anal cancer, which gay and bisexual men face at significantly elevated rates. The cost is significant but the protection is real.
