Norway has good sexual health infrastructure in Oslo. Outside the capital, you're mostly navigating your fastlege (GP) — which requires knowing exactly what to ask for. Here's how to get a complete STI screen wherever you are in Norway.

Olafiaklinikken — Oslo (Gold Standard)

Olafiaklinikken Address: Trondheimsveien 2, Oslo Web: oslo-universitetssykehus.no (search for Olafiaklinikken)

Olafiaklinikken is Oslo's specialist sexual health clinic and the best place in Norway for gay and bisexual men to access testing. Run by Oslo University Hospital, it provides:

  • Full STI panel including throat and rectal swabs
  • HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C
  • Free for Norwegian residents (dekket av helsekortet / egenandel may apply, but Olafia handles sexual health without a GP referral)
  • Staff experienced with gay and bisexual men's sexual health
  • PrEP consultation and prescription (see PrEP Access)

The queue: Olafia can be busy, especially in the mornings. Come early or check their website for drop-in hours vs. appointment booking. Waiting times for new PrEP patients can be months.

Three-Site Testing: The Critical Gap

A complete STI screen requires swabs from three sites plus blood tests. In Norway, this is the most commonly missed element:

  • Halsprøve — throat swab (chlamydia, gonorrhoea)
  • Endetarmsprøve / rektal prøve — rectal swab (chlamydia, gonorrhoea)
  • Uretral prøve / urinprøve — urethral swab or urine

Most Norwegian fastleger (GPs) focus on blood tests and urine and do not routinely offer throat or rectal swabs — not from judgment, but because they're not thinking about receptive anal sex. You must ask explicitly.

Say to your fastlege: "Kan du ta penselprøve fra hals og endetarm i tillegg til blodet?" (Can you take swab samples from the throat and rectum in addition to the blood test?)

Be prepared: some GPs don't stock these swabs. If they genuinely can't do it, ask for a referral to an infectious disease outpatient clinic or go to Olafia if you're in Oslo.

Fastlege (GP) — Outside Oslo

Your fastlege is your primary care doctor and the first point of contact outside Oslo. For sexual health:

  • Consultation covered by your helseordning (national health scheme)
  • You pay egenandel (co-pay) per consultation — approximately 165–265 NOK for a GP visit (2024 rates), with an annual cap (frikort threshold around 3,000 NOK)
  • Lab tests covered; swabs require advocacy as above

Ask for: HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B/C blood tests + throat and rectal swabs explicitly.

SjekkDeg.no (Home Test)

sjekkdeg.no is a free home testing service available in Norway — order online, receive a kit, send samples back. Limited to blood-based tests (HIV, syphilis, some hepatitis). Useful for HIV monitoring but cannot replace three-site swab testing. Good complement to GP-based care between full panels.

Testing Frequency

Every 3 months if sexually active with multiple partners. At Olafiaklinikken, regular attendees are expected. Outside Oslo, quarterly GP visits with the right panel is the target.
