Olafiaklinikken in Oslo is the gold standard, but Norway is a large country and not everyone lives in Oslo. Here's what's available in the major regional cities, and how to navigate sexual health outside the capital.
Bergen
Bergen is Norway's second largest city with a functioning sexual health infrastructure.
Haukeland Universitetssjukehus — Infeksjonsmedisinsk poliklinikk Jonas Lies vei 65, Bergen Bergen's main hospital has an infectious disease outpatient clinic that can handle PrEP and PEP referrals. Contact via your fastlege or directly.
For PEP: Legevakten Bergen Solheimsgaten 9, Bergen (open 24h) Phone: 116 117 (national Legevakt line) Go to Bergen Legevakt for PEP outside regular clinic hours. Call 116 117 first to confirm availability.
Testing: Bergen's fastleger are your primary testing route. Ask explicitly for throat and rectal swabs ("penselprøve fra hals og endetarm"). Some private clinics in Bergen also offer STI panels.
Community: FRI Bergen (fri.no) and the Bergen gay community have their own networks — check fri.no for local chapter contacts.
Trondheim
St. Olavs Hospital — Infeksjonsmedisin Prinsesse Kristinas gate 3, Trondheim Trondheim's main university hospital handles infectious disease care including PrEP consultation and PEP emergencies.
For PEP: Trondheim Legevakt Mauritz Hansens gate 4, Trondheim Phone: 116 117 Call ahead and go to Legevakt for PEP. Trondheim is a university city with a younger, progressive population — attitudes are generally good.
Stavanger
Stavanger Universitetssjukehus (SUS) — Infeksjonsmedisin Gerd Ragna Bloch Thranes gate 8, Stavanger
For PEP: Stavanger Legevakt Armauer Hansens vei 30, Stavanger Phone: 116 117
Stavanger is an oil industry city — more conservative culturally than Oslo or Bergen, but medical services are competent.
Rural and Smaller Towns
Norway has good Legevakt coverage across the country. For PEP in a rural area:
- Call 116 117 immediately
- They will assess urgency and direct you to the nearest facility with PEP medication available
- If you're very remote, they can coordinate emergency transport
SjekkDeg.no (home HIV testing) is useful for rural residents for whom travelling to the nearest clinic for routine testing is difficult — order a home test kit online.
PrEP Outside Oslo
Your fastlege anywhere in Norway can prescribe PrEP on blåresept §4. This is the route for people outside Oslo who can't access Olafiaklinikken. Some cities (Bergen, Trondheim) also have infectious disease outpatient clinics that can manage PrEP.
Smittevern.no or the Folkehelseinstituttet (FHI) website may have updated regional resources.
