Norway is among the most LGBTQ+-affirming countries in Europe — with legal same-sex marriage since 2009, strong anti-discrimination protections, and a broadly progressive social culture. Mental health support infrastructure is good, though public mental health waiting lists can be long.

Crisis Support

Mental Helse Hjelpelinjen Phone: 116 123 (24h, free) Norway's main mental health crisis line. Norwegian language primarily.

Emergency: 113 for immediate life-threatening situations. Any Legevakt or hospital akuttmottak (emergency department) provides acute psychiatric care — say: "Jeg trenger psykiatrisk hjelp" (I need psychiatric help).

LGBTQ+-Affirming Support

FRI — Foreningen for kjønns- og seksualitetsmangfold Web: fri.no FRI is Norway's main LGBTQ+ rights organisation. They operate FRI Oslo og Akershus (Rosa kompetanse) and have chapters in other cities. They provide community programming, peer support, and referrals to affirming services.

LLH (Landsforeningen for lesbiske, homofile, bifile og transpersoner) Now part of FRI. Check fri.no for current structure.

Olafiaklinikken psychosocial support: Olafiaklinikken's staff are experienced in the sexual health needs of gay and bisexual men, and can refer to psychological support services for issues like anxiety around HIV, managing a diagnosis, or sexual health-related mental health concerns.

Helsestasjon for kjønn og seksualitet (HKS) Oslo Municipality runs clinics specifically for gender and sexuality-related health, including psychological support. Check oslo.kommune.no for current locations.

Finding an Affirming Therapist

Norwegian private psychologists are relatively accessible and most younger practitioners in Oslo and Bergen are genuinely affirming. FRI can provide referral suggestions.

Cost: Private psychologist sessions approximately 1,000–1,500 NOK. Some coverage possible via your fastlege's referral to a psychologist under the DPS (Distriktspsykiatrisk senter) system — longer waiting lists but covered by helseordningen.

HIV Diagnosis and Mental Health

If you've received an HIV diagnosis, Olafiaklinikken's team can connect you with psychosocial support. Norway has a small but active HIV+ community. The care is medically excellent — HIV treatment is fully covered under the helseordningen.

HivNorge hivnorge.no — Norway's HIV organisation, providing peer support, information, and community for people living with HIV.
