Chemsex is present in France's major cities — Paris in particular has a significant and visible chemsex scene among gay and bisexual men. France has also developed a sophisticated harm reduction culture, with organisations like AIDES at the forefront of pragmatic, community-based support.

The Chemsex Landscape in France

Common drugs in French chemsex contexts:

  • Crystal methamphetamine (Tina, crystal) — present particularly in Paris
  • GHB/GBL (G) — popular for its euphoric/disinhibiting effects; overdose risk is real
  • Mephedrone (Méphédrone / 4-MMC) — stimulant; significantly present in France
  • MDMA — party and sexual contexts
  • Poppers (nitrite d'amyle) — legal, widely used, very common
  • Cocaine — stimulant; common in broader party and sexual contexts

If It's an Emergency

Call 15 (SAMU) or 112. If someone is unresponsive or you suspect GHB/GBL overdose:

  • GHB overdose: cannot be woken, appears to be sleeping, irregular breathing
  • Put in recovery position (position latérale de sécurité / PLS)
  • Call 15 (SAMU) or 112 — stay with the person

France has de facto protection for people calling emergency services for others in drug-related emergencies. Call. Do not leave the person alone.

Regional CeGIDDs also increasingly offer chemsex-specific counselling or can refer to appropriate services.

Harm Reduction Principles

For GHB/GBL:

  • Never mix with alcohol — dramatically increases overdose risk
  • Measure doses carefully — the window between recreational dose and overdose is narrow
  • Never use alone; ensure someone can check on you
  • Know the PLS (recovery position) and have 15/112 accessible

For crystal meth:

  • Extended sessions significantly increase HIV and STI transmission risk
  • PrEP must be taken consistently — set phone alarms during sessions
  • Plan for the post-session crash — arrange support in advance

For all drugs:

  • Drug checking services exist in France (services de réduction des risques); AIDES and harm reduction organisations can direct you to current services
  • Regular three-monthly STI testing is essential if using drugs in sexual contexts
  • PrEP works but requires consistent dosing

Getting Help With Drug Use

If drug use has become problematic:

  • AIDES — no referral needed, non-judgemental, experienced with gay and bisexual men's chemsex contexts
  • CSAPA services (Centres de Soins, d'Accompagnement et de Prévention en Addictologie) — public addiction treatment centres; your GP can refer you, or you can self-refer
  • Medecin généraliste — can refer to CSAPA and prescribe substitution therapy if appropriate
  • Assurance Maladie covers addiction treatment including residential rehabilitation via your GP's referral
