For the full clinical detail on each vaccine — what it covers, schedules, and evidence — see The Vaccine Checklist. This article covers Austria-specific eligibility, cost, and access.
Mpox (Monkeypox)
- Eligibility: Free for gay and bisexual men at elevated risk — particularly those on PrEP, with multiple partners, or in chemsex contexts.
- Vaccine: Imvanex (MVA-BN). Two-dose primary course, four weeks apart.
- Where in Vienna: The City of Vienna runs vaccination through Impfservice Wien (impfservice.wien) — book online. Appointments are also available at Aids Hilfe Wien and at the AKH infectious disease outpatient clinic.
- Outside Vienna: Available at state hospital infectious disease departments and through regional Aids Hilfe chapters. Check your local Aids Hilfe website for current availability.
- 2026 context: Following renewed mpox circulation in Europe through 2025–2026, catch-up vaccination campaigns have continued. If you haven't completed a primary course, treat this as a priority. If you had a course during the 2022 outbreak, discuss a booster with your clinician.
- Booking tip: Impfservice Wien is the most streamlined booking route for Vienna residents.
Hepatitis A & B
- Recommendation: Strongly recommended for gay and bisexual men. Hepatitis A spreads readily via oro-anal sexual contact. Hepatitis B is sexually and blood-borne, and can cause chronic liver disease.
- Vaccine: Twinrix (combined Hep A + B). Three doses at 0, 1, and 6 months.
- Cost and coverage: Hepatitis A+B vaccination is included on Austria's national vaccination recommendation list for at-risk adults. Coverage through ÖGK varies — some insurers cover it as a preventive measure, others do not. Aids Hilfe Wien can often provide vaccination at a subsidised rate or advise on the current ÖGK position. Expect to pay some amount if your insurer doesn't cover it.
- Where: Aids Hilfe Wien, your GP or Wahlarzt, and infectious disease outpatient clinics at university hospitals.
- Existing immunity: If you've had hepatitis before or have been vaccinated previously, a blood test confirms immunity status before starting a course unnecessarily.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
Gardasil 9 covers nine HPV strains responsible for genital warts, anal cancer, penile cancer, and throat cancer.
- Free for: Boys and young men up to age 21 through the national school vaccination programme and catch-up schemes. Austria extended HPV vaccination to boys in recent years. Check the current age limit at sozialministerium.at.
- HIV-positive adults: HPV vaccination is recommended regardless of age for HIV-positive individuals — reduced immune function diminishes natural protection. Discuss with your HIV specialist at AKH or your treating centre.
- Over 21, HIV-negative: Privately available. Cost is approximately €180–210 per dose × 3 doses = ~€540–630 total, plus the doctor's consultation fee. Available at GPs, Wahlarzt practices, and travel clinics. Aids Hilfe Wien may have updated pricing or subsidised routes — ask directly.
- Worth having even as an adult: HPV protection is meaningful at any age if you haven't been exposed to all relevant strains — the evidence supports vaccination into the mid-40s.
Meningococcal Vaccines
Not routinely covered for adults. For HIV-positive individuals, meningococcal vaccination (ACWY and B strains) is recommended — discuss with your HIV specialist. Available privately at GPs and travel clinics.
Practical Notes
- Aids Hilfe Wien as vaccination hub: For mpox and hepatitis, Aids Hilfe Wien is your most accessible and affirming starting point. They know current subsidy availability and can often administer or facilitate vaccinations directly.
- Impfservice Wien: Vienna's city vaccination service (impfservice.wien) is efficient and covers mpox for eligible groups. Non-Vienna residents should check their state's equivalent service.
- ÖGK coverage changes: Austria's public insurance coverage of preventive vaccines does shift. Always confirm current coverage at gesundheitskasse.at before assuming a vaccine is free or covered.
