While community clinics like Cy Checkpoint are excellent for rapid blood tests (HIV/Syphilis/Hepatitis), they do not perform bacterial swabs. To get tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea in your throat, rectum, and urethra, you must use a laboratory.
In Cyprus, you have two pathways to lab testing: the subsidized GeSY route or the private out-of-pocket route.
🏥 Pathway 1: The Subsidized GeSY Route
If you are registered with the General Healthcare System (GeSY), this is the cheapest way to get comprehensive STI testing.
Step 1: The Referral
You cannot walk directly into a lab and demand a GeSY-subsidized test. You must first book an appointment with your GeSY Personal Doctor (GP) or a specialist (like a urologist or dermatologist) and ask them to issue a laboratory referral for STI screening.
You must be explicitly clear about what you need. Ask for:
- Throat swab
- Rectal swab
- Urethral swab (or first-catch urine)
- Testing for both Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
Step 2: The Lab
Once the doctor issues the referral electronically on the GeSY system, you can visit any private laboratory that is contracted with GeSY (most major labs are).
Cost: You will pay a minimal co-payment, typically €1.00 per category of tests, up to a maximum cap (usually around €10.00).
The Drawbacks
- No Anonymity: The tests and the results are permanently logged on your GeSY electronic health record.
- Doctor Education: You may have to explain why you need a rectal swab to a Personal Doctor who is not used to treating gay men.
💶 Pathway 2: The Private Out-of-Pocket Route
If you are a tourist, not registered with GeSY, or simply prefer to keep your sexual health off your central medical record, you can bypass the referral system entirely.
Step 1: Walk into a Private Lab
Cyprus has many private diagnostic laboratories (e.g., Bioiatriki, NIPD Genetics, local independent labs). You can walk into almost any of them without an appointment or a doctor's referral.
Step 2: Request the Tests
Tell the receptionist you want a full STI screening. Again, specify that you need 3-site testing (throat, rectal, urethral/urine) for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, along with blood work for Syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis if you haven't done those at Cy Checkpoint.
Cost: Because you are bypassing GeSY, you must pay the full retail price. A comprehensive 3-site swab panel can range from €50 to €100+ depending on the laboratory.
The Drawbacks
- Expensive: It is significantly more costly than the GeSY route.
- Follow-up: If you test positive, the lab will simply hand you a positive result. You will then need to find a doctor (either privately or via GeSY) to interpret the result and write a prescription for the antibiotics. Read the Positive Result Pathway for what to do next.
This page explains how to get tested in Cyprus. To understand why 3-site swab testing is critical for gay men, and how often you should be testing, read the General Protocol for Routine Testing.
