If you test positive for a bacterial STI (like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, or Syphilis) in Cyprus, the treatment pathway depends entirely on where you got tested. Because testing is fragmented between community NGOs, GeSY doctors, and private labs, the treatment process can also be fragmented.

🔴 If You Tested Positive at Cy Checkpoint

If your rapid blood test at Cy Checkpoint in Nicosia comes back positive for Syphilis (or HIV/Hepatitis), you will not be left to manage it alone.

  • The Process: The peer counselors at ASM (AIDS Solidarity Movement) will sit down with you and explain the result.
  • Linkage to Care: Because Cy Checkpoint is a testing center and not a full medical clinic, they cannot prescribe antibiotics on the spot. Instead, they will directly refer you and help you book an appointment at a specialist clinic (like the Grigorios Clinic in Larnaca or a trusted GeSY specialist) to receive the confirmatory blood test and the required antibiotic injections.

📋 If You Tested Positive via a GeSY Doctor

If you received a referral from your GeSY Personal Doctor (GP) to a lab, and the lab results come back positive for Chlamydia or Gonorrhea:

  • The Process: The lab results are automatically sent to your Personal Doctor via the GeSY electronic system.
  • Treatment: You must return to your Personal Doctor (or the specialist who issued the referral). They will write a prescription for the necessary antibiotics (e.g., oral doxycycline for chlamydia, or a ceftriaxone injection for gonorrhea).
  • Cost: You take the prescription to a pharmacy. Under GeSY, the cost of the antibiotics is heavily subsidized, usually costing only a few euros.

💳 If You Tested Positive at a Private Lab (Out-of-Pocket)

If you bypassed GeSY and paid for testing privately, the lab will simply hand you your positive result on a piece of paper or via email.

  • The Process: The lab will not prescribe treatment. You must take your positive result to a doctor.
  • Treatment: You can either book an appointment with a private urologist/dermatologist (and pay their private consultation fee) or take the result to your GeSY Personal Doctor to get the prescription.

🗣️ Partner Notification

Cyprus does not currently have a centralized, public anonymous notification portal. The most effective route is to ask the clinic or doctor who diagnosed you to assist; many local sexual health units or NGOs can facilitate confidential partner notification on your behalf without revealing your identity. It's always better than silence.
