The Short Version
Slovakia offers a range of testing options for gay and bisexual men. Dom Svetla is the safest, most affirming starting point — free, anonymous, and specifically oriented toward the community. Public clinics offer free full diagnostics with insurance but less anonymity. Private labs offer discretion for a fee. For a full STI screen including three-site swabs, you will need either a public clinic or a private lab.

Staff are experienced with gay and bisexual men and the environment is entirely non-judgmental.
Dom Svetla also provides PrEP navigation, PEP referrals, chemsex support, and post-test counselling.

The Three-Site Testing Requirement
For gay and bisexual men, a complete STI screen requires swabs from three sites:
- Výter z hrdla — throat swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the throat)
- Rektálny výter — rectal swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the rectum)
- Uretrálny výter — urethral swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the urethra)
Dom Svetla rapid tests cover blood-borne infections but not bacterial swabs. For the full panel, see the public clinic or private lab options below.
Public Clinics (Infekčná klinika)
Best for: Insured residents wanting free full diagnostics
Bratislava — Kramáre Hospital (Infekčná klinika) Limbová 5, 833 05 Bratislava Phone: 02 5954 1111 Appointment required; referral from GP (obvodný lekár) usually needed for insurance coverage. Full diagnostics available including swabs. Less anonymous than Dom Svetla — ID and insurance card required. Staff attitudes toward gay and bisexual men vary.
Košice — VÚSCH (Infekčné oddelenie) Rastislavova 43, 040 01 Košice Phone: 055 789 2111 Similar structure to Kramáre; main infectious disease facility for eastern Slovakia.
When booking at a public clinic, be explicit about wanting three-site swab testing — say: "Chcem výter z hrdla, rektálny výter a uretrálny výter."
Cost: Free with Slovak public insurance (VšZP, Dôvera, or Union) and appropriate referral.
Private Labs (Paid, Discreet)
Best for: Discretion, no referral needed, fast results
Unilabs Bratislava Šancová 12, 811 05 Bratislava Website: unilabs.sk Cost: ~€50–100 for full STI panel including swabs Results: 24–48 hours English-speaking staff; appointment recommended but walk-ins often accepted; ID required
Medirex (multiple Bratislava and national locations) Website: medirex.sk Similar offering to Unilabs
Alpha Medical (multiple locations) Website: alphamedical.sk
Private labs require ID but are not connected to the same public health reporting obligations as hospital clinics. If privacy within the Slovak healthcare system is a concern, private lab plus Dom Svetla rapid testing is the most discreet combination.
Home / Online Testing
Self-test HIV kits are available at Slovak pharmacies (lekáreň) — no prescription, roughly €15–25. Tests for HIV only; not a substitute for a full panel.
Some European online services ship STI test kits to Slovakia — Dom Svetla staff can advise on options. For a full three-site swab panel, physical attendance at a clinic or lab is required.
Emergency and After-Hours Testing
For HIV-related emergencies (potential exposure, PEP), see pep-emergency.md. The Pohotovosť (emergency department) at Kramáre Hospital is available 24 hours.
