The Healthcare System

VšZP — Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa — the main public health insurer. Covers PrEP 100% for eligible patients.

Dôvera / Union — private health insurers in Slovakia. Do not currently reimburse PrEP.

Zdravotná karta / kartička poistenca — health insurance card. Required at public clinics.

Rodné číslo — national identification number (birth number). Required for public healthcare access. Not required at Dom Svetla.

Obvodný lekár / praktický lekár — GP / family doctor. Your primary care doctor.

Infektológ — infectious disease specialist. Who prescribes PrEP.

Infekčná klinika — infectious disease clinic.

Pohotovosť — emergency / out-of-hours service.

Nemocnica — hospital.

Centrálna príjmová observácia (CPO) — central admissions — where you go when presenting at hospital without a specific appointment.

Lekáreň — pharmacy.

eRecept — electronic prescription (used in Slovakia).

Key Medical Terms

HIV — HIV (Ľudský vírus imunitnej nedostatočnosti). Same abbreviation.

STI / pohlavná choroba — sexually transmitted infection. More formally: pohlavne prenosná infekcia (PPI).

PEP — Postexpozičná profylaxia — post-exposure prophylaxis.

PrEP — Preexpozičná profylaxia — pre-exposure prophylaxis.

Kvapavka — gonorrhoea

Chlamýdia — chlamydia

Syfilis — syphilis

Hepatitída — hepatitis

Krvné testy / krvné skúšky — blood tests

Swab Terms — Three-Site Testing

Výter — swab

Výter z hrdla — throat swab. For gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the throat.

Rektálny výter — rectal swab. For gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the rectum.

Uretrálny výter — urethral swab. For gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the urethra.

Moč — urine. Urine alone is not sufficient for a complete STI screen.

To request all three: "Chcem výter z hrdla, rektálny výter a uretrálny výter." ("I want a throat swab, rectal swab, and urethral swab.")

Key Phrases

At testing: "Chcem sa testovať na pohlavne prenosné infekcie vrátane výteru z hrdla, rektálneho výteru a uretrálneho výteru." "I want to test for sexually transmitted infections including throat, rectal, and urethral swabs."

"Pravidelne mám receptívny análny sex a orálny sex." "I regularly have receptive anal sex and oral sex." (Clinical context for three-site testing)

At Pohotovosť for PEP: "Mal som rizikový pohlavný styk a potrebujem postexpozičnú profylaxiu pre HIV." "I had a risky sexual contact and I need post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV."

"Potrebujem PEP pre HIV. Bolo to pred menej ako 72 hodinami." "I need PEP for HIV. It was less than 72 hours ago."

For PrEP: "Chcem začať s PrEP. Mám zvýšené riziko." "I want to start PrEP. I have an elevated risk."

For vaccines: "Chcel by som sa zaočkovať proti opičím kiahňam / hepatitíde A / hepatitíde B." "I would like to be vaccinated against Mpox / hepatitis A / hepatitis B."

General: "Nehovorím dobre po slovensky — hovorí tu niekto po anglicky?" "I don't speak Slovak well — does anyone speak English here?"
