The Netherlands is one of Western Europe's more LGBTQ+-affirming countries — Amsterdam has been a centre of gay culture for decades, and Dutch society is broadly accepting. That said, mental health challenges don't disappear in affirming environments, and access to good psychological care has its own Dutch system quirks (particularly around Eigen Risico and waiting lists).

Lellebel / Reguliersdwarsstraat community, Amsterdam Amsterdam's gay scene has a strong community support network — bars, community spaces, and events that provide social connection and informal support, which is its own form of mental health protective factor.
Finding an Affirming Therapist
Dutch healthcare has a complex mental health referral pathway:
- Your huisarts refers you to a GGZ (geestelijke gezondheidszorg — mental health care) provider
- Basic mental health support is covered by basisverzekering, but comes out of Eigen Risico (up to a point) and has waiting lists
- Private psychology practices are available and faster, but you pay out of pocket (typically €80–130/session)
For LGBTQ+-affirming referrals: Ask COC's local branch or Schorer — they maintain lists of practitioners known to work well with gay and bisexual men.
Online directory: Therapiepsycholoog.nl and OpenUp offer listings where some therapists specify LGBTQ+ affirmation as a specialisation.
HIV Diagnosis and Mental Health
If you've received an HIV diagnosis in the Netherlands, you're in one of the better environments in the world for treatment and ongoing care. The Dutch HIV treatment system is competent and comprehensive. HIV medication is covered by basisverzekering (above Eigen Risico threshold).
HIV Vereniging hivvereniging.nl — the Dutch HIV association, providing peer support, legal information, and community for people living with HIV.
GGD Soa Poli and your infectioloog can refer to psychosocial support as part of your treatment pathway.
