The Netherlands is one of the better places in Europe to be a gay or bisexual man navigating sexual health. The GGD Soa Poli is excellent, chemsex support infrastructure is among the best in Europe, and the Dutch approach to sexual health is pragmatic rather than judgmental. The main frustration is the PrEP waiting list — but there are workarounds.
Three Golden Rules for the Netherlands
1. Use the GGD — It's Free and Doesn't Touch Your Eigen Risico
The GGD Soa Poli is your primary sexual health clinic. Testing is free, anonymous, and doesn't affect your insurance deductible. If the GGD is full or turns you away, use your huisarts — but always try the GGD first. Book online at your city's GGD website.
2. PrEP: Don't Wait for the GGD Pilot — Go Via Huisarts
The GGD PrEP pilot is frequently full. The practical solution is your huisarts: a prescription for generic PrEP costs approximately €25–35/month. Don't go unprotected while waiting for a GGD PrEP slot to open. If you want monitoring testing to be free, get your pills from the huisarts and your monitoring tests from the GGD.
3. PEP During GGD Hours — Hospital SEH Outside Hours
During GGD opening hours: call the GGD PEP line immediately. Outside hours (evenings, nights, weekends): go directly to a major hospital SEH (emergency department). In Amsterdam: OLVG West or AMC. Do not go to the Huisartsenpost — they can't dispense HIV medication.
Getting Tested
GGD Soa Poli — free, anonymous, triage-based. Gay and bisexual men are a priority group. Book online at your city's GGD website.
Three sites: Ask explicitly for keelkweek (throat), anale kweek (rectal), and urethrakweek (urethral) swabs alongside blood tests. Dutch GPs may skip swabs — insist.
Testing frequency: Every 3 months.

PrEP
GGD pilot is often closed to new patients. Solution: huisarts prescription (~€25–35/month generic). Combine with GGD for free monitoring tests. On-demand PrEP (2-1-1 dosing) significantly reduces monthly cost.

PEP
During GGD hours: call the GGD PEP line. Outside hours: hospital SEH. Amsterdam: OLVG West or AMC. Rotterdam: Erasmus MC. Say: "Ik heb risico gelopen op HIV — ik heb PEP nodig." Within 72 hours.

Vaccines
Mpox: free via GGD. Hepatitis B: free for gay and bisexual men at the GGD — ask at your Soa Poli visit. Hepatitis A: private, €45–65/dose. HPV: free catch-up campaign ended; now private (€170–185/dose × 3).
Mental Health
COC Nederland (coc.nl) for LGBTQ+ community and referrals. Schorer/GGD Amsterdam (schorer.nl) for specialist LGBT psychological support. 113 Zelfmoordpreventie: 113 or 0800 0113.

Chemsex
The Netherlands has Europe's best chemsex harm reduction infrastructure. GGD Amsterdam chemsex programme, Mainline Foundation (mainline.nl), Jellinek addiction treatment (jellinek.nl). GHB emergencies: 112 immediately.
DoxyPEP
Available via GGD Soa Poli or huisarts — raise it directly, the evidence is well-known here. Very cheap.
Outside Amsterdam
Every major Dutch city has a GGD Soa Poli. Rotterdam (GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond, Erasmus MC for PEP), The Hague (GGD Haaglanden, HMC Westeinde), Utrecht (GGD regio Utrecht, UMC Utrecht).
