Latvia's mental health infrastructure is limited nationally, and LGBTQ+-specific support is primarily concentrated in Riga through Mozaika. The country has a relatively conservative social environment, with significant anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes in political discourse and outside the capital. Living in this environment — managing your sexual health and identity in a country with one of the EU's highest HIV rates and active social stigma — has a real mental health cost.

Crisis Support

Krīžu un konsultāciju centrs "Skalbes" Phone: 67 222 922 (Latvian, 24h) Latvia's main telephone crisis and emotional support line. Latvian language primarily.

Emergency: 112 for immediate safety situations. Hospital emergency departments (Uzņemšanas nodaļa) have psychiatric on-call.

For English-language crisis support: online international services such as Crisis Text Line (text-based, various countries) or Samaritans (UK-based, accessible from abroad) can be accessed if language is a barrier.

LGBTQ+-Affirming Support

Mozaika Web: mozaika.lv Mozaika is Latvia's main LGBTQ+ organisation and the single most important resource for gay and bisexual men in Latvia. They offer:

  • Peer support and community connection
  • Counselling referrals to affirming professionals
  • Legal support and rights information
  • Health navigation (including HIV, PrEP, Testpunkts)
  • English spoken

If you're struggling — with your identity, your HIV status, healthcare navigation, or anything that intersects with being a gay or bisexual man in Latvia — contact Mozaika first.

Riga Pride / Rīgas Praids Annual community event. Mozaika coordinates. Community connection through pride events and year-round programming.

HIV Diagnosis and Mental Health

Latvia's high HIV rate means that HIV diagnoses are not uncommon in the gay community here. The infectious disease team at LIC (Linezera iela 3) manages treatment, and Mozaika provides peer support for people living with HIV. If you've received a diagnosis:

  • HIV treatment in Latvia is fully covered by the state
  • Undetectable = untransmittable — modern treatment makes HIV manageable
  • Mozaika's peer network can connect you with others who have navigated this

The combination of an HIV diagnosis, potential disclosure concerns, and Latvia's social environment can be genuinely difficult. Mozaika is the right place to process this with people who understand it.

Finding an Affirming Therapist

Latvia has no formal LGBTQ+ affirmation requirement for mental health professionals. Mozaika maintains contacts with affirming therapists in Riga — ask them before booking independently.

Private psychologist: approximately €40–60 per session in Riga.

Public route: Through your ģimenes ārsts (GP) for referral to public psychiatric services. Waiting times and attitudes vary.
