Lithuania has one of the highest suicide rates in the EU, and mental health challenges are a significant public health concern. For gay and bisexual men, the intersection of a Catholic-influenced social conservatism (strongest outside Vilnius), limited LGBTQ+ visibility, and family rejection creates real mental health pressures. Resources are limited but exist.
Crisis Support
Jaunimo linija (Youth Line) Phone: 8 800 28 888 (free, 24h) Lithuania's main crisis and emotional support line, primarily for younger people but accessible to all. Lithuanian language focused.
Pagalbos moterims linija (Women's Line — also accessible to men in distress) Phone: 8 800 66 366
Emergency: 112 for immediate safety emergencies. Any ligoninė (hospital) has emergency psychiatric care available — go to Priėmimo skyrius and say "Man reikia psichiatrinės pagalbos."
LGBTQ+-Affirming Support
LGL — Lithuanian Gay League Web: lgl.lt LGL is Lithuania's primary LGBTQ+ rights and community organisation, based in Vilnius. They offer peer support, legal assistance, community connection, and referrals to affirming mental health professionals. If you need support and aren't sure where to start, LGL is the right first contact. English spoken.
LGL also coordinates community events and provides community connection for gay and bisexual men in Vilnius — which, in a country where social isolation is a real risk for LGBTQ+ people, is genuinely valuable.
Demetra Kauno g. 6, Vilnius — demetra.lt Demetra's remit extends to psychosocial support alongside sexual health. If you've received a difficult diagnosis or are struggling with anxiety around sexual health, their team can help or refer you on.
Finding an Affirming Therapist
The Lithuanian psychology and psychiatry profession has no formal LGBTQ+ affirmation requirement. LGL maintains information on affirming therapists in Vilnius — ask them before booking independently.
Private psychologist: approximately €40–70 per session.
Public mental health route: Your šeimos gydytojas (GP) can refer you to public psychiatric care through the poliklinikas system. Waiting times can be long, and quality varies. For sensitive matters, a private referral via LGL is usually preferable.
Outside Vilnius
Mental health resources for gay and bisexual men are almost entirely Vilnius-based. In Kaunas and Klaipėda, the LGBTQ+ community exists but is less organised. LGL can provide remote support and may know of resources outside the capital. Online therapy from Vilnius-based affirming therapists is a practical option for people elsewhere in Lithuania.
