Chemsex — using drugs in sexual contexts — is less visible and less discussed in Lithuania than in larger Western European cities, but it exists within Vilnius's gay community. Gay-specific chemsex support resources are limited; the main entry points are LGL and general addiction services.
The Drug Landscape
GHB / GBL (G) — Present and dangerous. No antidote, narrow margin between recreational dose and overdose.
Crystal meth — Present in some party and sexual contexts in Vilnius.
Amphetamines / speed — More broadly present in Baltic party culture; appear in some sexual contexts.
Lithuania has drug possession laws with criminal consequences for personal use. Seeking medical help in an overdose situation will not result in prosecution — emergency care takes priority.
GHB Emergency
If someone is unresponsive or cannot be woken after taking G:
Call 03 (ambulance) or 112 immediately.
Recovery position — on their side. Stay with them. Tell the operators what was taken. Time is critical.
Support Resources
LGL — Lithuanian Gay League Web: lgl.lt LGL is the primary contact for gay and bisexual men dealing with anything that intersects with their identity — including substance use. They can refer to appropriate support services and provide non-judgmental peer connection. English spoken.
Priklausomybės ligų centras (Addiction Disease Centre) Public addiction treatment services in Lithuania are available through the health system. Ask your GP for a referral (siuntimas), or contact the National Public Health Centre (Visuomenės sveikatos centras) for current contact details. Not LGBTQ+-specific.
Demetra demetra.lt — Demetra's harm reduction work extends to drug use in sexual contexts for gay and bisexual men. Their team can advise and refer.
Harm Reduction
Never use G alone. Always have a sober person present who knows what you've taken.
Don't mix G with alcohol. Seriously elevates overdose risk.
PrEP and testing: Chemsex significantly elevates STI risk. If you're on PrEP, take it consistently. After a chemsex session, get a full STI panel at Demetra and Santaros — throat, rectal, urethral swabs plus blood.
Post-session mental health: The crash after stimulant use, combined with shame about sex in a conservative cultural context, can hit hard. LGL's counselling services exist for exactly this moment.
