DoxyPEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is a single 200mg dose of doxycycline taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, shown in clinical trials to reduce syphilis and chlamydia risk by 70–80% in gay and bisexual men and trans women.
Is DoxyPEP Available in Greece?
Doxycycline is a widely available and inexpensive antibiotic in Greece. Some infectious disease specialists at Syggros Hospital and Attikon are aware of DoxyPEP evidence and will prescribe it on request. However:
- DoxyPEP is not part of official EOPYY guidelines
- Awareness varies — some specialists are very up to date; others less so
- Ath Checkpoint stays current with prevention evidence and can advise on which doctors are comfortable prescribing DoxyPEP in Athens
How to Get It
Ask at your next Loimoxiologos or Syggros appointment:
"Έχω διαβάσει για το DoxyPEP — δοξυκυκλίνη μετά από επαφή. Είναι κάτι που μπορείτε να συνταγογραφήσετε;" (Phonetic: "Echo diabasei gia to DoxyPEP — doxikyklini meta apo epafi. Einai kati pou boreite na syntagografisete?") ("I've read about DoxyPEP — doxycycline after sexual contact. Is that something you can prescribe?")
Or ask Ath Checkpoint for a referral to a doctor in their network who is familiar with DoxyPEP.
Coverage and Cost
DoxyPEP will likely be prescribed as a standard antibiotic (doxycycline has multiple licensed uses). With EOPYY coverage and a Loimoxiologos prescription, doxycycline is reimbursed at standard rates — your cost is minimal.
Without EOPYY/AMKA: doxycycline at a private Greek pharmacy costs approximately €5–15 for a course — inexpensive regardless.
What DoxyPEP Covers
Effective:
- Syphilis — strong reduction
- Chlamydia — strong reduction
Partial or uncertain:
- Gonorrhoea — some effect but antibiotic resistance is a concern
No effect:
- HIV — does not replace PrEP or PEP
- HPV, herpes, hepatitis
Dosing
200mg doxycycline (two 100mg tablets) within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Earlier is better.
Take with food and water. Avoid lying down for 30 minutes. Avoid prolonged sun exposure during a course (photosensitivity risk — relevant in the Greek summer).
Regular Testing Still Essential
Continue three-monthly testing even when using DoxyPEP: HIV test, syphilis serology, and three-site gonorrhoea/chlamydia panels. Ath Checkpoint or Syggros outpatient clinic for ongoing testing.
