Testing positive for an STI like gonorrhoea, chlamydia, or syphilis is a standard part of an active sex life. In Slovakia, the treatment pathway depends on where you were tested.
Where to Get Treatment
If you tested at Dom Svetla Checkpoint: Dom Svetla performs rapid tests for syphilis (and HIV/Hepatitis). If your syphilis test is reactive, they cannot prescribe antibiotics directly. They will refer you to an infektológ or dermatovenerologist (such as at Kramáre Hospital) for a confirmatory blood draw and treatment.
If you tested at a Public Clinic (Kramáre or VÚSCH): If you tested at a public hospital's infectious disease clinic, they will handle your treatment directly. With public insurance (VšZP, Dôvera, Union) and a GP referral, the consultation and medication are typically fully covered or have a minimal co-pay.
If you tested at a Private Lab (Unilabs, Medirex, etc.): Private labs only provide the results. To get treated, you must take those results to a doctor. You can go to a private urologist/dermatovenerologist (paying out-of-pocket for the consultation, usually €30–60) or go through your GP to get a referral to a public clinic.
The Treatment
- Gonorrhoea: Typically treated with a combination of an antibiotic injection (ceftriaxone) and oral pills.
- Chlamydia: Treated with oral antibiotics (usually doxycycline for 7 days).
- Syphilis: Treated with penicillin injections.
Wait to have sex: Do not have sexual contact (even with a condom) until your treatment is complete and your symptoms are gone. For chlamydia/gonorrhoea, this means waiting 7 days after starting treatment.
Partner Notification
If you test positive, you need to inform your recent sexual partners so they can get tested and treated.
Slovakia does not currently have a centralized, public anonymous notification portal. The most effective route is to ask the clinic or doctor who diagnosed you to assist; many local sexual health units or NGOs can facilitate confidential partner notification on your behalf without revealing your identity. It's always better than silence.
