Receiving a positive STI test result can be stressful, but treatment in Slovenia is accessible and effective.
Where to Get Treatment
- If you tested at Legebitra: They provide community testing but are not a medical clinic. If you test positive (or reactive on a rapid test), they will refer you directly to the appropriate medical facility—usually the Infection Clinic at UKC Ljubljana or a regional dermatovenereology clinic.
- UKC Ljubljana (Infekcijska klinika): Handles HIV, syphilis, and complex STI cases.
- Dermatovenerološka klinika: For STIs like gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and syphilis. A referral from a GP (osebni zdravnik) is generally needed, though emergency walk-ins for acute symptoms are sometimes accepted.
Partner Notification
Slovenia relies heavily on patient-led partner notification. You will be advised by your doctor to inform your recent sexual partners so they can get tested and treated.
Slovenia does not currently have a centralized, public anonymous notification portal. The most effective route is to ask the clinic or doctor who diagnosed you to assist; many local sexual health units or NGOs can facilitate confidential partner notification on your behalf without revealing your identity. It's always better than silence.
Costs
If you have ZZZS (compulsory health insurance), most STI treatments and follow-up tests are covered.
Remember to abstain from sexual contact until your treatment is fully completed and your doctor confirms it is safe.
