Slovenia provides modern and effective care for people living with HIV, primarily centralized in Ljubljana.
The System
HIV treatment in Slovenia is covered by ZZZS (the compulsory national health insurance) and is free at the point of access.
- Centralized Care: The vast majority of HIV care is managed at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Febrile Illnesses (Klinika za infekcijske bolezni in vročinska stanja) at UKC Ljubljana.
- Treatment: Standard modern antiretroviral therapy (ART) is readily available.
Your Rights and U=U
- Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U): Slovenian medical guidelines support the scientific consensus of U=U (in Slovenian: N=N, Nezaznavno = Neprenosljivo).
- Confidentiality: Your medical records are confidential. However, HIV stigma remains a challenge outside progressive circles, and discrimination in some healthcare settings (like dentistry) can occasionally occur, though it is illegal.
Support Services
- Legebitra: Offers peer support, counseling, and social groups specifically for gay and bisexual men living with HIV. They are the most knowledgeable community resource in Slovenia. (legebitra.si)
- ŠKUC: Also provides social support and advocacy within the LGBTQ+ community.
