Portugal treats HIV as a priority public health issue. Treatment is free, universally accessible, and managed by specialists in public hospitals.
The Acute Diagnosis Pathway
If you receive a reactive rapid test at CheckpointLX or another GAT facility, they will immediately perform a venous blood draw or escort/refer you directly to an infectious diseases department (Infecciologia) at a main SNS hospital (such as Hospital de Santa Maria or Hospital de São José in Lisbon).
A specialist (infecciologista) will confirm the diagnosis, run baseline blood work, and become your primary provider for HIV care.
Treatment and Insurance
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is provided completely free of charge by the SNS to everyone living in Portugal, regardless of nationality, residency status, or whether they have an SNS number. The medication is dispensed directly through the hospital pharmacy, not regular street pharmacies.
Legal Context and Disclosure
Portugal's public health framework focuses on care and prevention rather than criminalization. While intentional transmission could theoretically fall under general bodily harm laws, prosecutions are exceedingly rare. The medical establishment fully endorses U=U (Indetetável = Intransmissível). There is no legal obligation to disclose your status to partners, especially if you are undetectable.
Support Services
GAT (Grupo de Ativistas em Tratamentos) and Abraço are the core pillars of HIV support in Portugal. They offer peer support, psychological counseling, and help navigating the health system. Connecting with these organizations can provide essential support during the initial diagnosis period.
