Home testing in Poland is increasingly accessible, with several initiatives specifically targeting HIV screening and private commercial options for broader STI panels.
📦 Postal Testing
For general STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis), there is no free public postal testing service. However, commercial STI test kits can be ordered through various online pharmacies, private laboratory networks, and medical stores, and are delivered discreetly to your home or a designated collection point.
For HIV specifically, there are excellent free and anonymous options:
- AHF Poland: Offers free HIV self-testing kits delivered to a Paczkomat (parcel locker) of your choice. Request a kit by messaging them on WhatsApp or Telegram at +48 793 258 415.
- Social Education Foundation (FES): Through the zamowtestnahiv.pl campaign, complete an anonymous risk assessment survey to order a free HIV self-test kit to your home or a Paczkomat.
Symptomatic? Go to a clinic. Postal kits are for asymptomatic screening only. If you have active symptoms, contact your local Consultation-Diagnostic Point (PKD) or a GP directly.
🩸 The Finger-Prick Reality
The blood collection is where most people struggle. Squeezing thick drops of blood into a tiny tube or onto a card can be frustrating and messy.
How to succeed at the finger-prick test:
- Hydrate: Drink two massive glasses of water 30 minutes before you start. Thick blood won't flow.
- Heat: Do 20 jumping jacks to get your heart rate up, then wash your hands in hot water for 3 minutes. Your veins need to be warm and dilated.
- Gravity: Stand up to do the test. Keep your hand pointing down, below your heart level.
- The Pierce: Use the side of your ring finger, not the sensitive center pad. Press the lancet firmly into the skin before clicking the release button.
💊 Pharmacy HIV Self-Tests
HIV self-test kits are widely available for purchase in physical pharmacies and online (platforms like GdziePoLek or Ceneo).
- Cost: Typically 65 PLN to 145 PLN depending on brand (INSTI, Home Check, OraQuick) and whether bought in-store or online.
Reactive result? Rapid tests are screening tools only. If you receive a reactive (positive) result, confirm it at a free and anonymous Consultation-Diagnostic Point (PKD) or with a doctor. Keep in mind the window period for your specific test.
