A positive result for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis in the Netherlands means you need prompt treatment, and the pathway depends entirely on where you were tested.
The Treatment Pathway
If you tested at the GGD Soa Poli
Treatment is completely free and handled in-house. They will call you or message you to come back to the clinic. You will receive your antibiotics (pills or injection) on-site. This does NOT count toward your eigen risico (deductible).
If you tested via your Huisarts (GP)
Your huisarts will write a prescription, which you take to the apotheek (pharmacy) to pick up your antibiotics. If it's an injection (e.g., for syphilis or gonorrhea), the huisarts assistant or doctor will administer it. The cost of the medication and the lab tests comes out of your eigen risico, though the GP consultation itself does not.
If you tested privately
You usually need to take your positive results to your huisarts to get a prescription.
Partner Notification
The Netherlands has an excellent, free, anonymous partner notification system called partnerwaarschuwing.nl. The GGD will actively encourage you to use this system to notify your sexual partners anonymously via SMS or email. You receive a code from your healthcare provider, which you enter online to send the notification without revealing your identity.
