If you test positive via a rapid test at the GGD, they will immediately draw venous blood for a confirmatory test. Within a few days, the GGD or your huisarts will refer you directly to one of the 24 specialized HIV treatment centers in Dutch hospitals (e.g., DC Klinieken, OLVG, Erasmus MC).
💊 Treatment and Insurance
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is prescribed by your HIV specialist (internist-infectioloog) and monitored by an HIV specialized nurse (hiv-verpleegkundige).
Cost: HIV care and medication are covered by your basic Dutch health insurance (basisverzekering). However, this care will consume your annual deductible (eigen risico, minimum €385) every year.
