Home testing in Malta is primarily limited to HIV self-tests. There is no comprehensive national postal service for a full STI panel (Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, or Syphilis).
📦 Postal Testing
There is no free or centralized national postal home-testing service for a full range of STIs in Malta. For comprehensive screening, you must visit the Genitourinary (GU) Clinic at Mater Dei Hospital or community-based Health and Wellbeing Clinics.
For HIV specifically, HIV Malta provides an online option to request an HIV self-testing kit for a €25 donation. They offer delivery via MaltaPost in confidential packaging, as well as an "Easipik" service delivering to a secure locker in your town for added privacy. Delivery services like Wolt also offer HIV self-tests from around €19.40.
Symptomatic? Go to a clinic. Home tests are for asymptomatic screening only. If you have active symptoms, contact the GU Clinic at Mater Dei Hospital directly.
🩸 The Finger-Prick Reality
The blood collection is where most people struggle. Squeezing thick drops of blood into a tiny tube or onto a card can be frustrating and messy.
How to succeed at the finger-prick test:
- Hydrate: Drink two massive glasses of water 30 minutes before you start. Thick blood won't flow.
- Heat: Do 20 jumping jacks to get your heart rate up, then wash your hands in hot water for 3 minutes. Your veins need to be warm and dilated.
- Gravity: Stand up to do the test. Keep your hand pointing down, below your heart level.
- The Pierce: Use the side of your ring finger, not the sensitive center pad. Press the lancet firmly into the skin before clicking the release button.
💊 Pharmacy HIV Self-Tests
HIV self-test kits are available over the counter in local pharmacies across Malta.
- Cost: Around €28.50 (e.g., BioSURE HIV Self Test), varying by pharmacy and brand.
The 12-Week Window: HIV self-tests are only accurate for exposures that occurred at least 12 weeks ago. If you receive a positive result, contact the GU Clinic immediately for a confirmatory blood test and support.
