Receiving an HIV diagnosis is significant, but with modern treatment, it does not reduce your lifespan or your ability to have safe sex. HIV treatment in Latvia is accessible and covered by the state.

The Acute Diagnosis Pathway

If you test positive via a rapid test at Testpunkts, the result is "reactive." Mozaika staff will help you navigate immediately to LIC (Latvian Infectology Center) for a confirmatory venous blood test.

At LIC, an infectious disease specialist (infektologs) will confirm your diagnosis and become your primary doctor for HIV care.

Treatment and Insurance

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is prescribed by your infektologs. Latvia has made significant improvements in recent years, and ART is now fully state-funded for all citizens and residents with NVD coverage, meaning the medication is free. Treatment is initiated rapidly following diagnosis.

Latvia has strict public health laws, and intentional transmission of HIV is criminalized. However, if you are on effective treatment and have an undetectable viral load (U=U), there is zero risk of transmission to sexual partners. Discuss with Mozaika or your LIC doctor how U=U intersects with local expectations regarding partner disclosure.

Support Services

Mozaika provides essential peer support, counseling, and a safe space. A new diagnosis can feel isolating, especially given Latvia's broader societal views on LGBTQ+ issues and HIV, but connecting with community support helps significantly.
