The use of doxycycline as post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) to prevent bacterial STIs like syphilis and chlamydia is an emerging topic in Luxembourgish sexual healthcare.
Availability and Clinical Stance
Currently, DoxyPEP is not a formalized, routine public health protocol in Luxembourg. It is not advertised as a standard service at community testing sites or clinics.
However, the infectious disease specialists at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) are aware of international guidelines supporting DoxyPEP for high-risk individuals.
If you believe you are a candidate for DoxyPEP (e.g., due to recurrent bacterial STIs or engagement in chemsex), you must discuss it directly with a specialist at CHL Unit 20. Prescriptions are handled on a case-by-case, off-label basis.
What It Covers
DoxyPEP involves taking a single 200mg dose of the antibiotic doxycycline within 72 hours of condomless sex. It is targeted at preventing three specific bacterial infections:
- Syphilis: Highly effective at preventing infection.
- Chlamydia: Highly effective at preventing infection.
- Gonorrhoea: Provides some protection, but effectiveness is lower because many circulating strains of gonorrhoea are already resistant to doxycycline.
It does not protect against HIV (which requires PrEP or emergency PEP), Mpox, herpes, HPV, or any other viral infections.

If a CHL doctor agrees to prescribe DoxyPEP, the cost of the doxycycline medication at the pharmacy is extremely low under the CNS third-party payment system. You will only pay the standard minor patient participation fee.
