Italy has a mixed landscape for LGBTQ+ mental health. The north — Milan, Bologna, Turin — has relatively well-developed community infrastructure. The south and rural areas are harder going, with Catholic social conservatism and family pressure remaining significant forces. Italy has no national conversion therapy ban, and attitudes among older healthcare providers can be variable. That said, genuine resources exist, and the Checkpoint network extends beyond sexual health into psychosocial support.

🛋️ Finding a Therapist
The Italian psychology profession has no formal LGBTQ+ affirmation requirement, so quality varies significantly. Arcigay's local chapters often maintain lists of psychologists known to be affirming — that's the fastest route to a therapist who won't need to be educated before helping you.
Private psychologist cost: approximately €50–100 per session.
SSN route: Centri di Salute Mentale (Community Mental Health Centres) exist in every ASL area and provide free or low-cost psychiatric and psychological support. Waiting lists can be long. Ask your medico di base for a referral, or ask the Checkpoint to help you navigate the fastest route in your city.
If you're outside a major city, online therapy from an affirming therapist based in Milan or Rome is a practical and increasingly common option. Arcigay can facilitate introductions.
💊 HIV Diagnosis and Mental Health
An HIV diagnosis is hard, and Italy's social context — where disclosure carries real risks — adds genuine weight. The Checkpoint teams are experienced in post-diagnosis support and will not leave you to process it alone.
Lila (Lega Italiana per la lotta contro l'AIDS) lila.it — national HIV organisation providing support, peer connection, and advocacy. Chapters across Italy.
PLUS aps plus-aps.it — Association of LGBT+ people living with HIV in Italy, based in Bologna. Peer support, rights advocacy, community.

🗺️ The North–South Divide
Mental health support for gay and bisexual men is significantly better developed in Milan, Bologna, Turin, and Rome than in the south or rural areas.
If you're in Calabria, Sicily, or a smaller city: Arcigay's national network can connect you with remote support. Online therapy from an affirming therapist in a northern city is a real and practical option. Don't wait for local infrastructure that may not exist — navigate around it.
