Scotland has its own NHS — NHS Scotland — with distinct structures, policies, and institutions from the rest of the UK. The sexual health firewall and free-at-point-of-use principles apply throughout — for those fundamentals, see UK: The GUM Clinic & The Firewall.

Scotland is on its own administrative path. Most visibly: Scotland funded PrEP on the NHS in July 2017, years before England, making it the first country in the UK — and one of the first in the world — to do so nationally. If you are in Scotland, the system is well-resourced. If you know which doors to knock on.

🗺️ The Structure: Fourteen Health Boards

NHS Scotland is organised into 14 regional Health Boards. Sexual health services — GUM clinics, PrEP, STI screening, and HIV management — are commissioned and delivered at the Health Board level. The two boards that matter most for gay and bi men's sexual health are NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (Glasgow, Sandyford) and NHS Lothian (Edinburgh, Chalmers).

Patient ID: You will be assigned a CHI (Community Health Index) Number, not an NHS Number. Your sexual health records remain firewalled from your GP records.

🏛️ The Two Anchor Institutions

Sandyford (Glasgow)

Sandyford is the flagship sexual health and wellbeing centre for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, and one of the most LGBTQ+-competent sexual health services in Europe. Based in Glasgow's West End, it provides comprehensive GUM services, PrEP initiation, HIV testing, chemsex support, and counselling.

Sandyford is explicitly affirming and is accustomed to the full range of men who have sex with men's health presentations — three-site STI screening, slamming support, G use, and PrEP alongside PEP. If you are in Glasgow, Sandyford is your first call.

Chalmers Sexual Health Centre (Edinburgh)

Chalmers is NHS Lothian's specialist sexual health centre, based in Edinburgh. It operates the same model as Sandyford — comprehensive GUM, PrEP, HIV services, and LGBTQ+-aware practice. Edinburgh's queer community (centred on Broughton Street / the Pink Triangle) is well served here.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ Navigation & Support

Waverley Care (waverleycare.org) is Scotland's leading HIV and Hepatitis C charity. Based in Edinburgh but operating nationwide, they provide specialist support for people living with HIV, including case work, peer support, and wellbeing services. They are an excellent first point of contact outside of the clinic system.

Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) Scotland (tht.org.uk/scotland) provides national advocacy, testing services, and support for people living with HIV.

LGBT Health and Wellbeing (lgbthealth.org.uk), based in Edinburgh with Glasgow operations, offers mental health and wellbeing support specifically for LGBTQ+ people in Scotland, including a dedicated national helpline.

💬 Anonymous Partner Notification

If you test positive for an STI, you can notify your partners completely anonymously. You do not need to face a difficult conversation if you feel unsafe or anxious.

  • Clinic Health Advisers: Clinics like Sandyford and Chalmers employ Health Advisers. You can give them your partners' phone numbers, and they will text them anonymously to say they have been exposed to an STI and should get tested. They will never reveal your identity.
  • Let Them Know: A free, NHS-supported online service (letthemknow.org.uk) allows you to send anonymous texts or emails.
