Finland is geographically massive, and highly specialized LGBTQ+ sexual health infrastructure is concentrated heavily in the capital region (HUS). If you live in Tampere, Turku, Oulu, or smaller municipalities, the rules of access change.

🏥 The University Hospital Network

Outside of Helsinki, the highest level of sexual health care (including PrEP initiation, complex STI treatment, and emergency PEP) is handled by the regional University Hospitals.

Just like in Helsinki, always call 116 117 before going to the emergency room for PEP. The helpline staff will alert the correct department that you are coming for a time-sensitive post-exposure issue.

🤝 Hivpoint Services Outside Helsinki

Due to funding cuts in 2021, Hivpoint closed its permanent regional offices in Tampere and Oulu.

  • Tampere: Hivpoint organizes periodic free, anonymous rapid HIV and syphilis testing in collaboration with Sinuiksi ry (Näsilinnankatu 48 E). Check the Hivpoint website for the current testing schedule.
  • Nationwide Support: Hivpoint now provides nationwide support, including online counseling and chat services, from their Helsinki headquarters. If you are struggling to get a PrEP referral or appropriate care at your local health station, you can still contact Hivpoint's national helpline or chat for advice on navigating the bureaucracy in your specific region.

🌲 Small Municipalities

If you live far from a university city, your only public entry point is your local terveysasema.

General practitioners in rural or smaller municipal health stations may have zero experience prescribing PrEP or handling extra-genital (throat/rectal) swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhea. You must strongly advocate for yourself. Explicitly request referrals to the nearest infectious disease specialist if your local GP is unhelpful.

If privacy is a major concern in a small town, you may prefer to travel to the nearest major city to use a private clinic (e.g., Terveystalo or Mehiläinen) for discreet, out-of-pocket testing and PrEP prescriptions.
