If you test positive for a bacterial STI (gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis) in Estonia, treatment is straightforward and highly digitized.
The Treatment Pathway
- Tested at a Hospital or Specialist: If you tested via an infectious disease specialist or dermatovenerologist at a public hospital (e.g., LTKH in Tallinn), they will issue a digital prescription (digiretsept) for your antibiotics, or ask you to come in for an injection (for syphilis or gonorrhea).
- Tested at an NGO/Testing Site: If you received a positive result at an anonymous community testing site, they cannot issue a prescription. You will be referred to a specialist (infektsionist or dermatovenerologist) for treatment.
- Cost: With active Tervisekassa (health insurance), the consultation fee is nominal (often €5), and you pay a small co-pay for the medication at the pharmacy.
Digital Results
All lab results processed through the official health system will appear in your digital health record (Terviseportaal).
Partner Notification
Estonia does not currently have a centralized, public anonymous notification portal. The most effective route is to ask the clinic or doctor who diagnosed you to assist; many local sexual health units or NGOs can facilitate confidential partner notification on your behalf without revealing your identity. It's always better than silence.
