  • Without a referral: You will pay the full, out-of-pocket cost for lab tests.
  • With a referral: You only pay a small co-payment (typically €1 per test category, up to a maximum cap).

Is it Anonymous?

No. Because tests are ordered through your Personal Doctor and logged in the GeSY system, your identity and the tests performed are recorded on your electronic health record. If you require anonymity, you must use community services like Cy Checkpoint (which only offers rapid blood tests, not full swabs) or pay out-of-pocket at a private lab without using GeSY.

✈️ What About Tourists and New Arrivals?

If you are a tourist, a short-term visitor, or have just arrived and haven't registered for GeSY yet:

  • PrEP & HIV Care: You can still access PrEP and HIV care for free at specialist clinics (like the Grigorios Clinic in Larnaca).
  • Emergencies (PEP): You can access PEP at public hospital A&E departments. The medication is generally provided, but you may be charged a standard emergency room fee depending on your residency status.
  • General STI Testing: You will not have access to subsidized lab tests. You can either visit a community NGO for rapid testing or go directly to a private laboratory and pay full price out-of-pocket.
  • EHIC: If you are an EU resident visiting Cyprus, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay. However, standard routine STI screening is rarely considered an acute emergency under EHIC.

⚠️ Why You Might Not Want to Use GeSY for STIs

While GeSY makes testing very cheap, some gay and bisexual men choose to bypass it for sexual healthcare because:

  1. Lack of Affirming Care: Not all Personal Doctors are knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ sexual health, chemsex, or open relationships.
  2. Privacy Concerns: Having STI panels visible on a central health record might deter individuals who prefer strict confidentiality.
  3. Convenience: Booking an appointment with a Personal Doctor just to get a referral slip, and then taking that slip to a lab, is a two-step process. Paying out-of-pocket at a private lab removes the gatekeeper.
