Between MassHealth coverage, ACA vaccine mandates, and Fenway Health's robust vaccination programme, Massachusetts gay and bisexual men have excellent access to the full sexual health vaccine stack. The catch: you usually have to ask.
💉 The Core Vaccine Stack
| Vaccine | What it prevents | MA Access | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HPV (Gardasil 9) | Anal/throat/genital cancers; warts | Free up to age 26 (ACA); MassHealth covers up to age 45 for MSM | Ask explicitly if over 26. |
| Hepatitis A | Liver infection (rimming risk) | Free via MassHealth; free at FQHCs | Often done as combined A/B shot (Twinrix). |
| Hepatitis B | Liver infection (fluid risk) | Free via MassHealth and ACA | 3-dose series for non-immune adults. |
| Mpox (Jynneos) | Mpox lesions and severe illness | Free for high-risk MSM via MDPH | 2 doses required. Available at Fenway. |
🔑 The HPV Window
ACA rules make HPV vaccination free with no cost sharing up to age 26. MassHealth extends this to age 45 for men who have sex with men who were not previously vaccinated.
The Gardasil window closes. After age 45 without MassHealth, HPV vaccination is an out-of-pocket expense (~$250–350 per dose, 2 doses required). HPV is the only vaccine that actively prevents cancer. Do not delay.
🦠 Mpox in Massachusetts
Fenway Health integrated Mpox (Jynneos) vaccination early and has administered thousands of doses. Supply is now stable at Fenway and at MDPH community vaccine sites.
If you only received one dose during the 2022 shortage, you do not need to restart the series. Book your second dose at Fenway or your local MDPH clinic.

🏥 Where to Get Vaccinated in Massachusetts
- Fenway Health (Boston): Full vaccine stack available at standard and PrEP appointments. The most streamlined option for established patients.
- MDPH Community Clinics: Free vaccines for uninsured or MassHealth patients. Find events at mass.gov/dph.
- Planned Parenthood (statewide): Hepatitis A/B and HPV for eligible patients on a sliding scale.
- CVS / Walgreens: Hepatitis A/B and flu vaccines widely available; often covered by MassHealth or ACA insurance at no copay.
Bring your vaccine records. If you were partially vaccinated elsewhere, bring documentation. Fenway can check your Hep B immunity with a blood titer test so you don't repeat unnecessary doses.
