In Slovakia, full STI panels generally require visiting a clinic or private laboratory, but rapid HIV self-testing kits are readily available for private use at home.
📦 Postal Testing
Slovakia does not have a free public postal STI testing service. For comprehensive STI testing (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis), you cannot order a free kit to be sent to your home. Patients typically visit public clinics, NGOs (like Dom Svetla), or private laboratory networks (like Medirex).
Note: Medirex offers "intimate test bundles" purchased online, but you must still visit one of their collection centers to provide blood or swab samples in person.
Symptomatic? Go to a clinic. Home tests are for asymptomatic screening only. If you have active symptoms, contact Dom Svetla or a private Medirex center directly.
🩸 The Finger-Prick Reality
The blood collection is where most people struggle. Squeezing thick drops of blood into a tiny tube or onto a card can be frustrating and messy.
How to succeed at the finger-prick test:
- Hydrate: Drink two massive glasses of water 30 minutes before you start. Thick blood won't flow.
- Heat: Do 20 jumping jacks to get your heart rate up, then wash your hands in hot water for 3 minutes. Your veins need to be warm and dilated.
- Gravity: Stand up to do the test. Keep your hand pointing down, below your heart level.
- The Pierce: Use the side of your ring finger, not the sensitive center pad. Press the lancet firmly into the skin before clicking the release button.
💊 Pharmacy HIV Self-Tests
Rapid HIV self-tests (such as INSTI HIV Self Test or OraQuick) are easily purchasable in Slovakia.
- Availability: Over the counter at pharmacies (like Dr. Max) and online medical retailers — no prescription required.
- Cost: Typically €18 to €24 per kit.
Reactive result? Rapid tests have a window period. If you receive a positive result, follow up with a healthcare provider for a confirmatory lab test.
