A positive result for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis in Romania requires an appointment with a dermatovenereologist (medic dermato-venerolog) or an infectious disease specialist.
The Treatment Pathway
Testing at ARAS
If you tested at ARAS Checkpoint and receive a reactive result for syphilis, the staff will guide you. They cannot prescribe antibiotics directly but have established referral networks with affirming doctors in the public and private sectors, such as at Matei Balș Institute or Colentina Hospital.
Testing Privately (Synevo, Regina Maria, MedLife)
If your private test comes back positive, you will need to book a consultation to get treated. You can go through the public system (with a referral from your GP/medic de familie, which makes the consultation free) or pay out-of-pocket for a private consultation.
Treatment
- Gonorrhea & Chlamydia: Treated with antibiotic pills or an injection. You will take the prescription to a pharmacy. With CNAS insurance, the cost may be partially compensated.
- Syphilis: Requires intramuscular penicillin injections, usually administered within a clinic setting (like Colentina Hospital's venereology department) to monitor for reactions.
Costs
Consultations in the public system (CNAS) are free with a referral. Private consultations cost around 200–350 RON, plus the cost of medication.
Partner Notification
Romania does not currently have a centralized, public anonymous notification portal. The most effective route is to ask the clinic or doctor who diagnosed you to assist; many local sexual health units or NGOs can facilitate confidential partner notification on your behalf without revealing your identity. It's always better than silence.
