The Netherlands has no free national postal testing service. The GGD Soa Poli is the primary route for comprehensive, free STI testing — but for those who want to test from home, private postal kits and pharmacy HIV self-tests are both accessible options.

📦 Postal Testing

There is no free, publicly funded postal STI testing service in the Netherlands. Private services fill the gap:

  • Soapoli-online — A highly reliable service recommended by Soa Aids Nederland. They offer comprehensive home STI test kits (including the crucial 3-site testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea). You order online, collect samples at home, and return them in a prepaid envelope for ISO-certified laboratory analysis.
  • ZIZ — Another trusted, certified provider offering STI self-test kits that are analyzed in professional laboratories. Useful for ongoing asymptomatic monitoring.

Cost: Private kits typically cost €50 to €100 depending on the panel. They are not covered by your Zorgverzekering (health insurance) and do not count toward your Eigen Risico.

Symptomatic? Go to a clinic. Postal kits are for asymptomatic screening only. If you have active symptoms — discharge, rash, or pain — contact the GGD Soa Poli or your huisarts directly.

Private kits may not cover all three sites. A urine test alone misses most gonorrhoea and chlamydia infections in gay and bisexual men, who frequently carry asymptomatic infections in the throat or rectum. Confirm that your kit includes throat and rectal swabs before ordering.

🩸 The Finger-Prick Reality

The blood collection is where most people struggle. Squeezing thick drops of blood into a tiny tube or onto a card can be frustrating and messy.

How to succeed at the finger-prick test:

  1. Hydrate: Drink two massive glasses of water 30 minutes before you start. Thick blood won't flow.
  2. Heat: Do 20 jumping jacks to get your heart rate up, then wash your hands in hot water for 3 minutes. Your veins need to be warm and dilated.
  3. Gravity: Stand up to do the test. Keep your hand pointing down, below your heart level.
  4. The Pierce: Use the side of your ring finger, not the sensitive center pad. Press the lancet firmly into the skin before clicking the release button.

💊 Pharmacy HIV Self-Tests

HIV rapid self-tests are available without a prescription at Dutch pharmacies (apotheken) and online.

  • Availability: Major pharmacy chains and online health retailers stock CE-marked HIV self-tests. Common brands include INSTI and Biosure.
  • Cost: Typically €25 to €40.

The 12-Week Window: Pharmacy rapid tests detect antibodies and are only conclusive for exposures that occurred at least 12 weeks (3 months) ago. A reactive result must be confirmed with a venous blood draw at a clinic or the GGD.
