If you test positive for a bacterial STI (chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis) in Luxembourg, the treatment pathway is straightforward and highly subsidized by the state.
💊 The Treatment Pathway
Where you get treated depends on where you were tested:
If you tested at CHL Unit 20
The infectious disease specialists will handle your treatment directly. They will prescribe the necessary antibiotics (such as ceftriaxone injections for gonorrhea or doxycycline pills for chlamydia).
If you tested at HIV Berodung / CIGALE (Rapid Test)
Rapid tests are screening tools only. If your rapid test for syphilis is positive, they will refer you to CHL Unit 20 for a confirmatory blood test and subsequent treatment.
If you tested via a GP or Private Lab
Your GP will write you a prescription. You can take this to any community pharmacy. For injectable treatments like those needed for syphilis or gonorrhea, you will pick up the medication at the pharmacy and return to your GP or a nurse (infirmier) to have it administered.
💶 Cost
With a CNS card, the cost of antibiotics at the pharmacy is negligible (typically only a few euros for the patient participation). The consultation or nurse visit for an injection is also heavily reimbursed.
💬 Partner Notification
Luxembourg does not currently have a centralized, public anonymous notification portal. The most effective route is to ask the clinic or doctor who diagnosed you to assist; many local sexual health units or NGOs can facilitate confidential partner notification on your behalf without revealing your identity. It's always better than silence.
