Luxembourg has excellent HIV care, fully covered by the national health system (CNS), and strongly supports the U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) consensus.

🏥 The Diagnosis Pathway

Regardless of where you test positive in Luxembourg—whether at a GP, a private lab, or via a rapid test at HIV Berodung—you will be referred to the National Service for Infectious Diseases (Unit 20) at the CHL.

This single centralized unit manages almost all HIV care in the country.

  • Starting ART: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is usually started rapidly, often within days of the confirmatory blood test.
  • Cost: All HIV medications and associated quarterly monitoring tests are 100% covered by the CNS. You pay nothing out of pocket for your ART.
  • Dispensing: Your ART is typically dispensed by the hospital pharmacy at CHL rather than a street pharmacy.

⚖️ Disclosure & the Law

U=U is the medical baseline. On treatment with an undetectable viral load, you cannot transmit HIV sexually — this is settled science, and it underpins everything below.

Luxembourg has no HIV-specific criminal law and imposes no legal duty to disclose an undetectable HIV status. General laws on bodily harm or reckless endangerment could apply only to someone who knowingly puts a partner at real risk — but if you are durably undetectable there is no meaningful transmission risk, so in law there is nothing to disclose.

The law on HIV disclosure and criminalisation varies between countries and can change.
