Mental health and sexual health are deeply intertwined. Internalized shame, anxiety around HIV, chemsex recovery, and relationship dynamics all manifest physically. Ireland provides some public mental health support, but waitlists are notoriously long, making the NGO sector critical.
🚨 Immediate Crisis Support
If you are in immediate physical danger or experiencing a medical emergency, call 112 or 999, or go to the nearest hospital A&E.

🛋️ Therapy & Counseling Options
The Public Route (HSE)
You can request psychological support via your GP or a public clinic, but the reality of the public system is difficult.
Waitlists for HSE psychological services can be extremely long (often exceeding 6 to 12 months). Furthermore, you cannot choose your therapist, meaning you cannot guarantee they will have specific LGBTQ+ cultural competence or understand the nuances of chemsex.
The NGO Route (LGBTQ+ Specific)
Because the public system is strained, community organizations provide specialized counseling:
- LGBT Ireland: Operates a national helpline and offers peer support groups.
- HIV Ireland: Provides free short-term counseling specifically for individuals living with HIV or those experiencing extreme anxiety regarding their sexual health.
- Belong To: Support specifically targeted at LGBTQ+ youth (under 24).
- Outhouse (Dublin): A community center that frequently hosts support groups and provides signposting to gay-friendly therapists.
The Private Route
If you can afford to pay out of pocket (typically €60–€100 per session), private therapy is the fastest route to care. You can use directories like the IACP (Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) to search for therapists who specialize in LGBTQ+ issues.
